‘Celebrating
Disability’ was the theme for the globally acknowledged International day of
persons with disabilities which was celebrated on 3rd December 2013 at DPS
Rohini. Being an inclusive school, there is already an awareness amongst students
& staff. In order to create empathy towards
various categories of disabilities, different activities were organized by
‘Hope’, the Special Education department. The activities aimed at sensitizing
the participants towards the hurdles faced by individuals with special needs
and how they lead meaningful lives by overcoming these hurdles.
The activities included: -
a) A Blind Folded walk: Staff & Students were blindfolded & taken for a
walk around the school premises to make them aware of how the visually impaired
students move around the school. Every participant was assisted by a volunteer
who made sure that the participants were verbally guided & did not injure
themselves.
b) My Ears – A gift: Blindfolded participants were made to read a passage
on a computer using JAWS – a software which reads Microsoft Word. They were
then asked to recollect & write the passage. This software is used by
students with visual impairment to read, study & take exams. Most
participants found it difficult to read using JAWS.
c) Language Decoding Activity – Volunteers from Classes
XI & X conducted this activity in all classes. Students were asked to
decode statements using new symbols which were used as substitutes for the
English letters. Volunteers then briefed the participants about the problems
faced by dyslexic students while writing & reading language.
d) Reflecting Truth: This was another activity to
demystify the phenomenon of Dyslexia. Participants were asked to read printed
text through a mirror. This activity emphasized the problem of ‘Mirror –
imaging’.
e) Left is Right: Left handed individuals were asked to write using their right
hand & vice versa to understand individual differences in handedness.
f) Three-legged Race: The alternate legs of two participants were tied
together. Six such pairs raced each other to experience hurdles faced when one
is physically impaired.
g) Face Painting: Participants worked in pairs to paint conflicting emotions on
each half of the face. This was to depict emotions felt by individuals with
special needs. ‘Happiness vs. Gloom’, ‘Laughter vs. Tears’, ‘Frustrations vs.
Sadness’, were some of the emotions depicted.
h) Mouth Painting: Participants had to paint keeping the brush in mouth.
This was to bring sensitivity about individuals who lose their limbs &
still manage to lead productive lives.

Confederation of the Blind [AICB] awarded DPS Rohini
the best supporting NGO award for 2010-11 for our long standing partnership and
contribution to their institution. Every year proceedings from sale of
newspapers is donated to AICB.
DPS, Rohini entered into a new partnership with ‘Sparsh’- A school for the mentally challenged children. Adult students of Sparsh set up a stall during the parent-teacher meetings held in August 2011 to sell the products [Room- fresheners and Rakhi Thalis] made by them at their vocational centre. Sale proceedings were to be used to provide education to special children from economically weaker sections of the society. This exercise provided a platform to the students of DPS Rohini to interact with adults with mental retardation, thereby enhancing their sensitivity.
Akanksha - Yet another initiative which has started this session is the adult literacy drive initiated by students of classes IX, X and XI. Volunteers from these classes are staying back after school to teach functional academics to the illiterate employees of class IV level. Starting with learning to write their names and addresses, this programme hopes to enable these adults to operate bank accounts and ATMs on their own. Currently 10 adults have been enlisted under this programme.
GOONJ - DPS, Rohini continues with its collection drive of old clothes and woolens which are donated to GOONJ, an NGO which distributes urban excesses to rural areas. It is usually done twice a year.
